So far, things were going far better than Tolan had hoped. No mistaken identity, no assuming he was an aggressor, no attempt to take the silver from him.
"I regret that I was not able to come with supplies," Tolan said, quickly unstrapping the coffer of coins from the saddle before the Drow who held his horse's reins led the animal away. "Our men are still in the process of gathering what they can, they are due to arrive in an hour, no more than two. In the mean time, I find it necessary to speak to Captain Irzen alone."
He paused outside the tall tent the sergeant had led him to, acknowledging the large, black wolf at the tent flap while trying not to make prolonged eye contact. From what he'd seen of the dogs his father had trained as guardians, they considered a stare to be a challenge. The last thing he wanted was for that wolf- Nightrunner?- to slip into guard mode.
"Well, Sergeant?" he asked. "Do I enter, or would the captain prefer to meet with me outside?"
