"A hundred and fifty men plus officers!" Drax said with feigned incredulousness, rolling his eyes dramatically. "Against your phantom army of ten thousand! This is what you call hope, Tolan?"
"You've never seen what Drow warriors can do," Tolan replied, absently rubbing his side as if an old wound from his adventuring days suddenly pained him. "And with the inside information they claim to have, they could do that much more damage. Am I correct in assuming that, Captain?"
"And you expect to meet their terms for this?" Drax said, leaning forward as he spoke. "At fifteen silver a man, that's well over two thousand silver pieces! Can the treaury support such a foolish endeavour?"
Everyone looked to Lord Dalor, whose post included the role of Treasurer. "It...it could," he answered, nervously watching Drax's reaction.
"Even if we drain the treaury to the last copper, I intend to at least have a treasury, and everything else that makes Yarfell strong, when this is over. With your kindly and honestly offered aid, Captain Irzen of the Shadow Riders, I truly believe that our city can be saved from Venger." As he spoke that last sentence, he glanced quickly to the observing courtiers, making direct eye contact with his sister.
Anyone who was paying attention would have noticed Kirriam's quick nod, and then seen her quietly slip from the room.
"Now then, Captain," Tolan continued as Drax uttered an outraged snort of disbelief, "what supplies are you and your men in need of to make your first strike?"
